A new book on Mahatma Gandhi

 London, Jan 31, A new book on Mahatma Gandhi, containing a unique collection of visuals of his statues, murals, graffiti, wall paintings, puppets and posters by various photographers was launched here to coincide with the 60th anniversary of his assassination.

The 144-page book titled ‘Mahatma Gandhi — Images and Ideas for Non-Violence’ has been authored by broadcast journalist Vijay Rana. It was released at a function in Nehru Centre last night.

Probably the first book with colour photographs relating to Mahatma Gandhi, it has images from all parts of the world - a Gandhi street in Uruguay, a library named after him in rural Mexico, a stencil image in the middle of a street in Paris and a large poster hanging next to a garbage dump in Mumbai with the inscription: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”.

The true credit for the book must go to those photographers who have created those remarkable images of one of the “greatest figures of the 20th century, Rana said.

“Yet more admirable is the reverence these images of peace and non-violence show for Mahatma Gandhi.” The book aims to record the noble endeavours of those who resist authority, oppose injustice and awaken public opinion around the world by following the path of Mahatma Gandhi, Rana said.

“These photographers provide us valuable evidence of ordinary people applying Gandhian methods to confront the mighty and the powerful in their regions,”
